Sanctuary at Fraser Villa has transformed its
care to vastly improve the life of its elders through
a gradual culture change. Trinity Health, the fourth
largest Catholic healthcare system in the U.S. honored
Sanctuary at Fraser Villa with the following awards for 2006:
- Best Place to Work With the Best People-
- Leadership in Quality Improvement and Resident
Safety
- Excelling in Meeting Community Needs in 2006
- Innovation and Learning Around Cultural Changes
Many factors were considered when Trinity Health made
the decision to honor Sanctuary at Fraser Villa for these awards.
The Best Place to Work With the Best People award was
a result of employee satisfaction surveys, turnover
rate, attendance records, and committee participation
from all staff to develop and implement changes in policies
and procedures. Gail Sliwinski, administrator, noted,
“Our CENA Leadership Council is one of the many
committees developed at Sanctuary at Fraser Villa to examine the
way we normally do things to determine what the best
way would be. This paradigm shift is prominent throughout
our journey of change that affects our way of life daily.”
The second award, Leadership in Quality Improvement
and Resident Safety addresses quality improvement initiatives
to perform in the top quartile of CMS quality measures
for nursing care. “We were selected because of
our process improvement around resident care”,
Sliwinski stated. “We have a dynamic Director
of Nursing, Diane Hryciuk, R.N.,M.S.N. who has been
instrumental in raising the bar in the nursing department.”
The third award, Excelling in Meeting Community Needs
was given for the fundraising activities of residents
and staff. The fundraising committee incorporates the
needs of the residents, staff members as well as the
broader community recognizing the importance of improving
the quality of life for all people. In addition to assisting
residents and staff, the committee adopted families
in the community at Christmas time, and donated to Hurricane
Katrina relief efforts.
The fourth award was given for Innovation and Learning
Around Cultural Changes relating to the 3-year transformation
from a medical model of care to a social model. The
adopted social model of care is known as the “EDEN
Alternative” which has a basic philosophy of eliminating
the three plagues of “loneliness, helplessness
and boredom.” Incidentally, Sanctuary at Fraser Villa has been
evaluated as an Edenized facility has earned an “Eden
Tree” which was be presented on June 14th.
Plans to spend the honorariums received from Trinity
Health has not been determined. Sanctuary at Fraser Villa will gather
residents and staff to choose the best place the funds
will benefit the residents. |
